DFI 8    28 May 2019

Went back over the importance of  being cybersmart. Also reiterating that it is the learners responsibility for how they use devices and keeping themselves safe. Note -  go over cybersmart expectations for looking after their devices.
Blogs need to be helpful, positive, quality and thoughtful. The purpose is to share learning with others.
Discussion on the benefits of Hapara and its use in the classroom. I use Hapara system for going into the childrens' work and posting comments on what they have done and provide ideas for next steps. It is also a useful management tool to make sure they are on task. It also shows what sites they have been on.
Moved onto using Chromebooks to use devices to understand what the kids can and can't do.
Looked at screenshots and have notes on how to do this as well as other screen shortcut keys. Have made a shortcut doc for reference.
Castafy is already loaded on the Chromebook.
While some material has been 'over my head' I have still got a lot out of the past eight sessions. I aldo have the notes both handwritten and those that were on the weekly agenda.
Thanks for the support from the facilitators and the help I received from the other participants.

DFI 7 22 May 2019

There were a few things that I will use use in my classroom once I revisit over the next week.

The Hangout with Dorothy covered the meaning of connected by keeping learning visible. They run together.
- Go back over Google Maps
- Chicken slide useful for the inquiry on our chicken coup later this year.
- Check out the Online Tool kits and see what they offer and what I may be able to use. Also Google+ community resources
- Check YouTube fundamentals. Do not let kids download YouTube; use Google Drive to share videos.
- Applications for Learning - check out the different links.
I found the Google Draw session interesting and will be useful. Look over slide 2 of the presentation. Will be able to explore the different options. One area was the building using different shapes. This links in with Geometry which is coming up. eg name shape, no. of faces, sides etc.
Google Slides area was also interesting as the kids like to use slide shows during writing. Will introduce Google Slides and reiterate slides are the support not the main thing. Also used as a presentation too.
Hangout with Kent focused on the use of tools such as drones and cameras. Fantastic tool (drones) limited only due to cost.
I found the various resources on Pepeha very useful.(apart from the other 'resources' that were attached to it and played to the group).   Need to type it out and record it. Share with class, also explain te difference between Pepeha and Mihi.

DF! 6 Dealing With Data

DF! 6

Notes to self. Go back over and look at Scratch and consider introducing it to Room 1 and implementing it.
Go through slides especially Slide 2. Online Tool Kits - check out.
Technology is not just a tool when it transforms the way we learn.
Google forms are also through Google Drive.

Dave Winter was the guest this week. He was very helpful and supportive, as were Madeline and Nicola.
Hangout covered empowerment and the importance of empowering our children and teachers. There were some interesting analogies shown that were very thought provoking. Jigsaw with the pieces showing Empowering, Connected, Visible and Ubiquitous showed how they all fitted together.
Visibility - Learning has to be visible was mentioned in the On Top session . It also needs to be future focused.
We also covered various Google Forms including Google Maps and spread sheets. Also the process of graphing the results. One to information is on the form, when highlighting the years ensure these are in plain text. Highlight all information and go to charts and insert. Decide what type of graph is best suited..Have made a Google spreadsheet for data covering Numeracy, Reading and Writing.

Google Maps will be useful when we do our Inquiry into Kumara and its history. Comparing the changes over the years in the town and present maps and historical maps.

DFI 9 May 2019

Comments about Hangout. Make teaching and learning visible and how visibility to learner is paramount, let the children know what is coming - Learning Intentions, Success Criteria. I have both written on white board and they set the success criteria. Need to explain the importance of both. Learning experiences are like a maze - floundering around. Need to provide guidance and easy to understand directions.
* check slides for videos
* Share learning visibly
*Ready to share - children / teachers

Deep Dive
Workbook, presentation - check both - OMG Tech!
Watch videos  - show class

Chalk and Talk
Paper Plane Activity
- Follow written instructions
- No deviation
- Importance of specific written instructions
- Computers are stupid - only as good as the instructions give literally.
Scratch Activity
- Kids' Knowledge / experience

Making Meaning

* Live steam Monday - Tech Week 20/5/19 - online
Coding - understood basics and how it can be useful in the classroom. Children in Room 1 have an idea on this.
(Nicola came out on Monday this week and went over this in the class)Children all interested and keen to carry on. This is evident when they have free time in class.

I still find that some of the material is way over my head, however some of it I am using in the classroom.

DRI Session 41 May2019

Notes DFI Slide 24, One Direction Parody Song" Who do you share your data..." Share song with class and then discuss.

An interesting and challenging day. Discussed the importance of sharing and how it could can influence and raise achievement outcomes.
The main focus was on Class Sites and also how to manage the various sites. One of the slides had a number of various class sites. It was interesting looking at the various sites and the information that is able to be stored. While all of the sites were very interesting there were four that I will revisit. They are: Room 6, Senior Syndicate 2017, Pohatu Class, and Te Ara Takitina Base Camp.
The different set ups and restrained / careful use of colour. Need to consider Theme and Design - think of less not more. I need to add the Chicken  Coop Project into our school site
Went over everyone's work site and receive feedback. Also had the opportunity so give feedback via a sheet.
Also the importance of Lear, Create, Share.

DF3

Attended DF3 at Grey High School Wednesday 3 April 2019.. Refer to the agenda for timetable and subjects.

There was a very interesting Hang Out with Dorothy Burt supported by  various slides. I will need to go over them and the Hang Out ant my own pace so I am able to process the information. There were references to Sir Ken Robinson which I need to follow up as it seems very interesting.
Setting up Google Sites and practicing doing these with the help of Madeline and Nicola was very useful and it a tool that I will be able to introduce into my classroom. Some children may be able to set up their own sites and those who do not know I, with support,

DFI 2019 Day1

Attended 1st Digital Fluency Intensive session on 20 March 2019 at Grey High School, Greymouth. The session covered many areas which are included in the agenda under Core Business West Coast Cluster No.1.

I learnt that I could introduce Google Groups whereby I could email/message the children in my class en bloc to pass on messages / important information. Also sending feedback on their work. This could also be used for information for parents of upcoming events or happenings in Room 1.

By using the information learnt during the day and having rewind access to the sessions will enable me to go over this in my own time and pace. This will increase my confidence over time which will benefit the children and my professional development.
I also learnt the importance of voice recording and some of the ways that it could assist the children in both reading and writing. I also was shown how create tables that can be used for setting out newsletters, brochures etc.
